Natural Remedies for Colon Health

Your colon is an essential organ in your body.  The colon is one of the primary organs involved in the digestive process.  It is responsible for absorbing vitamins, nutrients, salts, and waters.  When the items are being properly absorbed, the body functions smoothly, but when the colon is not working properly it can cause a host of digestive issues that are very uncomfortable to deal with.  That is why it is essential to keep your colon healthy and below is a list of 9 foods that will help keep your colon healthy.

1. Apple Juice

You’ve certainly heard of the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and it turns out that statement is beneficial in keeping a healthy colon.  Apples are effective towards keeping your colon healthy.  Apple juice is an effective colon cleanser.  Drinking 3-4 glasses of apple juice encourages bowel movements and breaks down toxins.  Freshly squeezed apple juice will yield the best results, if that is not available,  organic apple juice will work just fine.

2. Lemon Juice

Lemons have high amounts of vitamin C and anti-oxidant properties  to help the digestive system function properly.  Lemon juice can be used to cleanse the colon. There are a couple different lemon juice remedies that you can follow:

Mix the juice of one lemon, sea salt, and honey into a glass of water.  It is important to drink this solution in the morning on an empty stomach.  This mix will give you more energy along with better bowel movement.

Combine with two teaspoons of apple juice and drink this mixture 3-4 times a day for about 3 days.

Both of these remedies are used to clean out your colon and help you maintain healthy bowel movements.

3. Ginger

Ginger has proven to be an effective colon cleanse.  Ginger helps reduce bloating but also helps stimulates the colon by keeping the colon free from harmful toxins and waste.  It helps with digestion by triggering the secretion of digestive juices.  Doctors suggest combining ginger with herbs such as chamomile, lemon balm, and fennel seed that can relax the colon and help flush out the excess waste in your body.

4. Sea Salt

Sea salt is another cleansing method that has been very effective.  One specific remedy for cleansing your colon is the sea salt and water remedy, which is as followed:

  • mix one tablespoon of sea salt with a glass of water

  • Stir well and boil it for a minute

  • Drink this solution warm or cold in the morning

  • This remedy may cause nausea at first, so it is best to lie down for a few minutes and gently massage your colon area

  • This will cause you to feel the need to empty your bowels

  • Do this up to five times a month

  • It is also very important to drink lots of water throughout the day as this method can cause diarrhea

This remedy removes all toxins that are accumulated in fecal matter and the digestive.  It is better to avoid this remedy if you are suffering from high blood pressure or other heart problems.

5. Flaxseed

Flaxseed is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are antioxidants that work to help cleanse your colon.  Flaxseeds are also high in fiber, absorb water and expand the colon, and will also clear the body of any toxins and mucus as the waste passes through the body.  Adding flaxseeds to yogurt, cereal, and fruit is an easy and effective way to get more fiber into your diet and help cleanse your colon.

6. Vegetable Juice

It’s best to avoid processed and cooked foods when cleansing your colon.  Instead of eating solid foods, drinking vegetable juices are a great way to help with the process.  Green vegetables are the most effective in cleaning out your colon.  They contain chlorophyll, which helps remove toxins.  In addition, the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids included in these vegetables help keep your body healthy.  If you do not want to drink vegetable juice, herbal tea has many of the same benefits and works as a great substitute.

7. Fiber based foods

Eating foods with plentiful amounts of fiber help cleanse the colon by removing harmful toxins from it.  Fiber keeps stool soft and improves bowel movement, which causes the body to remove waste.  Some examples of fiber-rich foods include fresh fruits like grapes, raspberries, pears, fresh vegetables like broccoli, artichokes, and peas.  Cereals, whole grains, nuts, and beans are also good sources of fiber.

8. Yogurt

Eating yogurt with regularity is a great way to keep the colon healthy.  Since yogurt is a probiotic, it will provide you with good bacteria that promotes digestion.  Good bacteria found in yogurt include lactic acid and bifidobacterium, which are also found in the human gut and help aid in digestion.  Yogurt, like most dairy products, contains a high amount of calcium which combats the growth of cancer cells around the colon.  Yogurt provides a variety of health benefits and is a great food source for helping clean your colon.

9. Water

Water is important for all parts of your life, but it is especially important for a colon cleanse.  Drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water every day will help activate the colon and in no time it should be functioning normally.  Drinking a sufficient amount of water will also stimulate the peristaltic action, enabling food to move through the digestive system.  We need to drink lots of water to keep our bodies functioning properly and stay hydrated.

Whether your colon is unhealthy or not, it is always important to consume some of these foods to make sure that you don’t develop digestive issues.  For some of these methods, the results will not happen right away so it is important to let the remedies take their time to do their work before immediately giving up on them.
